Sarah's Grammar Tips: Their, There and They're

I've noticed that many people make the same mistake when writing the words their, there and they're. It's like they are having an issue distinguishing the difference between which written word to use because al three of the words sound the same. Similiar to the where, were and we're there is a distinct way you can differentiate between the three words when you have to write them and are not sure which there you need to use.

When you want to refer to a location, very similiar to where, think there as in here. The root word in there is here. When you are writing and need to say "tHERE it was" or "It's over tHere" you want to use the there that specifically has the here in it. Use this particular spelling even when talking about time, "There once was" "There used to be all kinds of music in the 90's"

They're is similiar to we're as it is missing the letter A. The words 'they' and 'are' are brought together with an apostraphe to create a new word they're which means they are. "They're running in the park", "they're fighting" or "they're pretty old".

When you want to use their in a sentence you wantto remember that it is the possessive tense of they. If they own something, it's their's. "This is their's". "Their team won." "Their house is yellow."
