Welfare: Commonly Known As Public Assitance

There are many individuals in America who don't know how public assistance or welfare began. Let alone these are the same people who currently abuse the system. Welfare was introduced during the 1930's by president Franklin D. Roosevelt. In the 1930's America was facing what many of us have come to learn as the great depression. It was a time after the war where many families struggled tremendously because their fathers and husbands alike were ill, dead or simply incapable of working because of injuries and mental problems after the war.

In short to address these issues several public services came into play. In 1935 Social security was implemented and in 1939 the governmental Act that was established for Social Security was amended in 1939 and incorporated unemployment and the first official form of welfare which was known as AFDC (Aide for dependant children).

In 1996 the Clinton administration reformed the welfare system incoporating a work program and they put a limit to how long families should be on the system.

People were living their entire lives on welfare and that was not the intent that these programs warranted.

Unfortunately there are many people who would much rather get on the system and work their WEP program for little to no money; when many of them are capable of getting a good paying job.

I think it's about security and dependability. Many people were raised on the system so when they turn 18 or so the first thing they do is rely on the system.

It's sad to see that such an important tool be abused to the point where it seems ALMOST uneffective.
