Sarah's Grammar Tips: What is Grammar?

Grammar is nobodies best friend! Many people run from it and for the most part won't even try  to figure out exactly what grammar is really all about. People often confuse grammar with punctuation but they are two different things but related to eachother. One of the best ways to understand how grammar functions and what it relates to is by first understanding Grammar by definition.

Now if you were to google define grammar or go to an online dictionary you will end up with a complex definition for Grammar such as:
                                

a : the study of the classes of words, their inflections, and their functions and relations in the sentence

b : a study of what is to be preferred and what avoided in inflection and syntax 

 

This fancy definition was provided by The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

All that definition is saying is simply that grammar is the use of words properly in a sentence according to if it is a verb, noun etc, proper tense and in context to what you are saying. When using proper grammar you'll easily be able to distinguish between there, their and they're and things like
how and when to properly use is and are. Grammar deals with the 8 parts of speech and helps identify between an active and passive voice.

Next time you sit down to do a paper, write and article or blog don't be intimidated by grammar because it is truly your friend if you want to communicate acurately while writing.
