HIspanic Heritage Month

Cubans
Today marks the end of what America and the Library of Congress refers to as Hispanic Heritage month. It starts on Septemeber 15th and runs through October 15th. It is supposed to be a time in schools and on the media where the hispanic heritage in America is glorified and acknowledged.

Uniquely enough the majority of hispanics don't acknowledge this time. They see it as a way to be coupled together with other people who they may not and usually don't connect with although they are hispanics. Hondorians want to be viewed as Hondorians, Nicaragauns want to be seen as Nicaraguans, Puerto Ricans as Puerto Ricans, Guatemalans as Guatemalans, Ecuadorians as Ecuadorians, Cubans as Cubans, Dominicans as Dominicans and so forth.

Although similar in language and genetic make-up they all are uniquely different and should be viewed as such and that is why they have their own parades and times to celebrate and acknowledge their own self.

Interestingly enough Mexicans are also thrown into the category of hispanics and their heritage is glorified during this time as well when Mexicans are not hispanics. They are classified as such in America because of the language they speak. Chicanos/Mexicans have their own genetic make up and are extremely different from the other hispanics.

America is a place where segregation is promoted so it makes sense that they would couple everyone together simply because they share a language regardless as of to how different they truly are; yet the census bureau doesn't classify being a hispanic as a race....Hmmmm?

Better yet I speak English as many Americans do, but can we classify ourselves as Europian or a person from England even though we are clearly connected to them as most Spanish speakers are connected to Spain?

But it's okay to do it to hispanics...
