Impulse Clickers

This particular blog is dedicated to all you "impulse clickers"and I am not referring to the dog training device. I'm talking about the people who constantly press on the mouse button when their computer or laptop isn't responding quickly enough; you know what I mean.

Well maybe some of you don't. "Impulse clickers" is a term I came up with and use that refers to those people who rapidly and repeatedly click on the mouse or enter button in anticipation  of speeding up the amount of time it will take the computer to respond to them.

I wonder if any of these "impulsive clickers" will ever recognize that it's what they are doing that is causing the computer system to respond slowly to them? You could tell them on every click "Stop, you're only slowing down the computer system" and they will respond every time with a new version of "I know, but I want it to speed up".

You can continue on by trying to provide them with a little bit of knowledge as of to what occurs with every click by explaining to them "each time you click over and over on the mouse or press the enter button like that, it actually SLOWS DOWN the system because it's like hitting a reset button on the same program. It's not good for the processor, the program or the computer itself. You're going to cause it to the program to over respond, freeze or you are going to cause the whole computer to crash." but they will insist on clicking.
THE RESULTS OF IMPULSIVE CLICKING
If you share a station with an "impulsive clicker" and they notice that you are using the same computer with no issues they immediately  blurt out "How'd you get it to work?" or "It never works like that for me." When you tell them that it's because you aren't clicking the way they do they don't want to believe it, insist that there's a trick you are not sharing with them or they simply refuse to accept that their rapid clicking is the reason why they are experiencing  technical difficulties every time they use a computer.

I don't understand the rationale of the "impulsive clicker" because their goal is to start a program or initiate a task of their choice but it seems that they become more interested in clicking the button and monitoring how fast the computer will respond. I can not fathom why they continue the behavior once they are informed that it won't provide them with the results they seek.

I could understand it if the individual exhibiting the behavior is an impulsive character type but in some cases the person is not impulsive. Then it makes me think that maybe they have a problem with understanding what is being verbally communicated to them.

Whatever feeds the fury of "impulse clickers" it is very intriguing to me. It leads me to consider that "impulsive clicking" is one of those many behaviors humans in today's world exhibit that is directly a result of the fast paced world and the need to receive instant gratification; besides aren't ALL programs supposed to load in two seconds just like the internet?

  1. I'm an impulsive clicker. It's annoying to sit there and do nothing but wait so I just keep clicking, it make me feel like I'm doing something important during the wait period.
